How to Get Rid of Varicose Veins: Top Treatments for Smooth, Healthy Legs

How to Get Rid of Varicose Veins: Top Treatments for Smooth, Healthy Legs

Varicose veins aren’t just a cosmetic concern. If left untreated, they can also cause discomfort, swelling, and complications like venous ulcers or blood clots. These bulging, twisted veins develop when blood flow is disrupted, often due to chronic venous insufficiency, weakened vein walls, or damaged valves.

Fortunately, Dr. David T. Jacobs offers several treatments to restore your legs to a beautiful and healthy state at South Shore Vein and Aesthetic Medicine

Read on to learn about our top treatments in Rockville Centre, New York.

3 treatments to eliminate varicose veins on your legs

To determine which treatment is right for the varicose veins on your legs, Dr. Jacobs refers to their location, size, and the severity of your symptoms.

In addition to visual inspections and a review of your symptoms, he uses ultrasound images to document the severity of your venous disease.

He also uses cutting-edge technology like Veinlite® —  a handheld transilluminator vein finder — — to map treatment plans and determine the best location for injections.

We offer a variety of vein treatments in our Rockville Centre, New York, office, including:

Endovenous laser therapy

Endovenous laser therapy is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins that uses laser energy to heat and seal off larger veins.

During endovenous laser therapy, Dr. Jacobs inserts a 360° radial 1470 nanometer laser into your problematic vein under ultrasound guidance. The heat from the laser fiber closes your varicose vein.

This minimally invasive procedure is highly effective and offers a faster recovery than traditional surgery.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical varicose vein treatment that uses a special solution called a sclerosing agent. Dr. Jacobs inserts the material directly into your varicose vein. The solution irritates your vein walls and causes the vein to close.

We offer the following types of sclerotherapy:

Regardless of the sclerosant type, the result is the same: your blood flows through healthier veins, and the treated vein fades as your body absorbs it. This treatment is quick, minimally invasive, and doesn’t require lengthy downtime.

Microphlebectomy

For larger or more severe varicose veins, microphlebectomy might be recommended. During this procedure, Dr. Jacobs makes a small 1-millimeter incision and removes the varicose vein.

Traditional phlebectomy requires an incision about the size of a pencil eraser, or 5-6 millimeters. This makes microphlebectomy incisions much smaller.

This treatment is performed under local anesthesia. Because it only requires tiny incisions, scarring is far less noticeable than with traditional phlebectomy. Remember, the increase from 1mm to the average size of a pencil eraser (6mm) is a 500% increase.

What if your bothersome veins aren’t on your legs?

Not all problematic veins develop on your legs. Some can form on your face and hands. Dr. Jacobs can treat your visible veins whether they’re on your thighs, ankles, hands, or even on your face.

For these veins, Dr. Jacobs may recommend VeinGogh treatments. This minimally invasive procedure is designed to treat small spider veins and vascular blemishes on the face and body.

It delivers focused bursts of energy to the vein, which causes it to collapse and fade over time.

Lifestyle modifications to complement your vein treatments

Even with these treatments, you don’t want to miss out on lifestyle modifications that support circulation. These healthy habits help reduce your risk of developing varicose veins in the future.

Lifestyle modifications that support healthy veins include:

After your vein treatment, our South Shore Vein and Aesthetic Medicine team can provide specific guidance on the best lifestyle modifications for you.
