Botox Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is the original injectable treatment for temporarily reducing wrinkles. “Botox” has become the common term for injectable neurotoxins, of which there are several. In skillful hands, Botox injections smooth out common types of wrinkles like frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet around your eyes, so you can look years younger.
There’s no escaping wrinkles as you age. However, some people develop more wrinkles than others and may start getting them at an earlier age — usually due to genetics and factors like smoking and excessive sun exposure.
Unfortunately, these wrinkles add years to your face and make you look tired. If you have problems with wrinkles, Botox injections are an excellent way to minimize their appearance.
How does Botox work?
Botox comes from the naturally occurring botulinum toxin, which undergoes special processing to make it safe and effective. The toxin is a paralytic that freezes your muscles. In the form of Botox, tiny doses injected into your face prevent the nerves that control your facial muscles from sending the chemical messages that cause you to frown.
If the muscles can’t contract, wrinkles won’t form, so your skin stays smoother. These effects last for around three months, so four Botox treatments a year should keep your wrinkles under control.
In Dr. Jacobs’ skilled hands, Botox treatments don’t alter your features or freeze your expression. You can move your face as normal with the exception of using the wrinkle-creating muscles. Botox is the most effective way of achieving natural-looking, smooth skin without undergoing cosmetic surgery.
What happens when I have Botox injections?
Before having your Botox treatment, you discuss your goals and expected outcomes with Dr. Jacobs. He examines your face and wrinkles and advises you on the results you can expect to achieve. He also reviews your medical history and checks your vital health indicators to ensure you’re a good candidate for the procedure.
It’s not necessary to have any anesthetic because the injections cause minimal discomfort, but many patients choose to numb their skin beforehand with an anesthetic cream or gel. Dr. Jacobs marks the points on your face where he needs to inject the Botox and calculates exactly the right amount for optimal effect and minimal risk.
Botox injections don’t take long; patients frequently fit their appointments into their lunch hour. After your treatment, you may carry on as usual with your daily routine. You might have slight soreness at the injection sites, but this quickly wears off.
